A Tail-Wagging Day at our Dog Friendly Exmoor Cottages

Dawn breaks over Exmoor National Park, and at one of the region’s most welcoming dog friendly Exmoor cottages, Birch Cleave Barns, a four-legged guest stirs with excitement. Today promises an adventure tailored for both human and canine visitors in this pet-friendly paradise.

The day begins with a brisk walk from these dog friendly Exmoor cottages along ancient trails straight from the cottage door. Our canine explorer bounds ahead, investigating new scents while Exmoor ponies graze nearby, accustomed to respectful visitors at these pet-welcoming accommodations.

Mid-morning finds our intrepid duo at Tarr Steps, a medieval clapper bridge spanning the River Barle. While the human companion marvels at this feat of 13th-century engineering, their four-legged friend paddles in the shallow waters, cooling off and perhaps dreaming of the wild salmon that once navigated these streams in abundance.

As noon approaches, they retreat to a dog-friendly pub in the charming village of Dulverton. Here, under the shade of an old oak tree, both enjoy a well-deserved rest. The dog laps water from a bowl thoughtfully provided by the publican, while its owner samples local fare, including the renowned Exmoor Blue cheese.

The afternoon sees them ascending Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor’s highest point. The climb is invigorating, and the reward is spectacular: a panoramic view stretching from the Bristol Channel to the rolling Quantock Hills. Our canine friend’s ears perk up, catching the distant bleating of sheep and the cry of circling buzzards.

As the day wanes, they make their way to Porlock Weir, a picturesque harbour dating back to the 15th century. Here, dog and owner stroll along the pebbly beach, the salty sea air reinvigorating tired limbs. Seabirds wheel overhead, their calls mingling with the gentle lapping of waves against weathered fishing boats.
